Basic Education Deputy Minister and Free State MEC of Education to launch Motheo District No racism, bullying and anti-social behavior campaign in schools

Basic Education Deputy Minister Dr. Makgabo Reginah Mhaule and the Free State MEC of Education Dr. Tate Makgoe will on Monday, 22 August 2022 launch the Motheo District vigorous “No Racism, Bullying, and Anti-Social behaviour campaign in schools”.

This campaign which was launched by Free State MEC for Education, Dr Tate Makgoe on 15 March 2022 in Welkom, Lejweleputswa District follows, incidents widely reported in the mass and social media of alleged racism, assault and bullying in schools located in Lejweleputswa District namely Wessels Maree Secondary, Dagbreek Primary School and Bothaville Hoer Skool.

These incidents also include disturbing learner on learner violence which has led in some instances to killing of learners by fellow learners.

“Together with our stakeholders which include school management teams, School Governing Bodies, South African Police Services, Department of Social Development, Department of Health we want to use this campaign to eradicate the scourge of subliminal and blatant racism, sexism, vandalism, assault, corporal punishment, sexual harassment, alcohol and drug abuse as these anti-social behaviours disrupt learning and teaching in our schools,” MEC Makgoe said.

Deputy Minister and MEC will be joined by the senior management of the department and other strategic stakeholders such as Human Rights Commission, RCL, SGBs, teacher unions and SAPs.

The department will also use this campaign to implore learners to come to school everyday and not drop out from schools. Principals, deputy principals of all the Motheo District former model C schools will also attend the launch.
