Civil society calls on Angie Motshekga to address queerphobic bullying in schools

A group of civil society organisations have raised serious concern about the ongoing queerphobic bullying and discrimination against queer learners in South African schools.

Uthingo Network, an LGBTQI+ organisation based in Pietermaritzburg, and 16 other civil society organisations wrote an open letter to Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga, calling on the minister to hold teachers accountable and create queer-affirming school environments.

The letter, dated August 26, also brought to light the suicide of school pupils who were allegedly the victims of queerphobic bullying.
